The South African Department of Transport is responsible for co-ordinating Search and Rescue operations.The national MRCC exists at Plattekloof, near Cape Town and the port control offices at the major ports of Saldanha Bay, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban and Richards Bay act as MRSCs under its control. The MRCC and MRSCs are manned on a 24 hour basis.
